  • Short answer "In my opinion YES"

Long answer, still yes but:

- "Are we ready?"
- "Who is going to teach it?"
- "Why are we switching?"
- "Do we believe that language of instruction is the problem?"

If you are a Millennial like me you know how switching languages and going back and forth from Arabic to French has caused more harm than good. The problem is not the language per se but the readiness and the strategy to introduce a language or another.

I am for switching to English because of pragmatic reasons. English will more likely serve the needs of our society and the challenges of the world today.

There is clearly a change in our foreign policy and Morocco is distancing itself from the coloniser. However, a big decision like this cannot be merely based on political tensions with France.

I am interested in knowing your opinion.
What do you think? Are you for this change? Do you think we are ready for it? How long should it take? What are you ready to do to prepare yourself and your children to this?

  • Where are you really from?

⛔️ this is probably not the answer you expect.

When people ask where are you from? What are they trying to discover? or know? Your ethnicity? Your origins? Your roots? Where you belong? Where you feel home? Where you should go back to?😂

I want to say that this question doesn't offend me, as long as the intention is to get to know something about me and not to exclude me😁 This questions can also be a great ice breaker.

My answer is usually that I am Moroccan because this I assume is what they are trying to know: My cultural and ethnic background. I am not transparent, so yeah I get it that people can see that I am obviously not ethnically from here.

BUT, if my answer is "I am from Munich", this answer should suffice and that's "savoir-vivre" 101.

My point is to say that what makes a difference is not in the question per se but in the intentions.

However, I also understand that this query has deeper implications about how we perceive race, identity and nationality in a world with a lot of movement .

Roughly 26% of Germany's population has a migration background. 3.5% of the world population lives in countries not their own 272 million people live away from home whatever home is or was. So we need to let our definition shift and evolve.

Also what does this question really answer? What does it tell you about me, or about my identity and my experiences, my stories?

Well probably many things but also NOTHING at the same time.

Also, the "where are you really from" is not unique to "locals".
I also get asked a lot by other Moroccans, I meet. Knowing I am from Morocco, is not enough. They'll ask about the city I grew up in, the schools I have attended, my parents' neighbourhood ... because they also want to put you in a box and know what type of Moroccan you are :D ... and I honestly find this more irritating :D

and you? Where are you from?
  • The feminisation of poverty refers to the disproportionate representation of women in the world’s poor.
It is a consequence of lack of income, but also lack of opportunities related to gender biases.
These biases affect women's access to equal opportunities and their ability to pursue education or careers.

Can we end poverty? Yes.

We can eliminate poverty through
- Equity
- Climate change solutions and climate justice.
- Education
- Eradication of hunger and thirst
- Peace efforts

  • Let’s kick off the week with some motivation!
I love this quote because, I don't know if it is age :D or parenthood or exhaustion or the way too many disruptive "trends" and ideas surrounding us. Don't get me wrong, very often "disruption" is good and positive. Change never comes from steadiness and comfort. However, from being a consumer, a producer but also an analyser of social media, I have grown frustrated by the mainstream, superficial, senseless but DOMINANT content.
At the end of the day, being yourself, standing for what you believe but being open to be proven wrong is the boldest thing one can do.
No matter where in the spectrum you stand, the most courageous thing to do is to be yourself.

Hopefully, this quote resonates with you today and makes you take a firm position and stand by your convictions this week!

And, don’t forget to leave your favorite quote in the comments below.👇

  • How well we integrate the children of immigrants is a good indicator of host countries’ integration policies.

In 2013, in the 22 OECD countries, nearly one in five 15-34 year-olds (20%) was the child of an immigrant or had immigrated as a child.
  • When a major disaster hits, it can take over the news. The way we deal with horrific images on newspapers, or on tv as adults, is different from the way young audiences are affected.

Experts are pretty clear, as parents or c are givers we need to protect our children from distressing videos and images. However, it is also important to talk to them about what is happening. If your children go to school, they will hear about what happened (from their classmates or maybe older kids).

I personally rather give my son the news and information myself rather than let some 10 or 11 year old do it. I also want to make sure that he knows his dad and I follow the news and that we can answer his questions. This way, we are his go-to people to get "reliable" and "accurate" information.

If he asks to see, I tell him that I would rather save him the images because they are distressing and they might affect him way too much.

But how do you talk to your kids about disasters?
How do you talk with them about something difficult they’ve seen or heard in the news?

How do you prepare them for what they might hear at school or while talking with their friends?

  • My objective is to unpack these treasures, translate and adapt them for today's multicultural world.

Why❓

Because it is the only way to:

📌 Help our children develop a positive and balanced self-identity and build deep and strong connections with both their heritage, languages and the society they live in and belong to. It is possible yes!

Kanzyana targets Moroccan immigrant parents (non-parents, non-moroccans are also welcome) and aims to accompany them in their parenting abroad journey.

Our voices and stories, need to get louder, our beautiful dialects and languages too.

About Me 🤓

I am Moroccan, I also hold a German passport, I have lived in a few countries (France, UK, UAE) but I am Moroccan, from head to toe.

I don't buy into that "citizen of the world" and "Ms International" extravaganza :D (IYKYK) I was born and raised in Rabat but my roots are deep into the High-Atlas Mountains from one side of the family and the Anti-Atlas range on the other. I am also aware. that identity is
- not fixed
- not singular
- not a possession
- not held in the control of any entity
- not definitional

My experiences, travels, studies ... have all shaped the woman I am today and my identity is constantly being made and remade.

My roots do not define me but they are not something I need to upgrade from or apologise for and this is what I want to convey as part of being unapologetically who we are.

... and this is what motivates this project: Kanzyana

I believe in a wonderfully diverse world. Diversity enriches societies and broaden horizons. It is also an important foundation for creating and maintaining identity, belonging and citizenship values.

  • We live our lives based on our experiences, and to be empathetic we must listen to the experiences and life stories of others. It is important that children understand that there are lots of people in this world with various beliefs, skin colours, customs, sizes, physical/mental abilities, and ways of life.

Leading education theorists, have written about the importance of cultivating young children’s abilities to communicate across differences as an essential part of education in a globalised world. Diversity activities teach young children to respect and celebrate the differences in all people (even their own).

The commitment to embracing cultural diversity begins in childhood and it doesn’t happen by chance. I believe that it is our responsibility as immigrant parents to push for the integration of these topics in our children’s curriculum. We all carry our cultures with us in everything we do. They’re all around us- the food that we eat, the language we speak, the stories we choose to tell them. When children see their families’ cultures represented and celebrated, and when they are guided to find harmony between both worlds, they are significantly more likely to develop positive identities.

No matter where we come from it is important to talk to our children, from a very young age, about these things. If you belong to the ethnic, religious … majority you have the responsibility to actively expose your children to as much diversity as possible and if you are an immigrant or a minority you need to equip your children with the right tools for them to own their diverse background, celebrate it and share parts of it with their environment.

  • Stay true to yourself.

Such a clichĂŠ advice. But you cannot be someone else, so you better understand what it really means.

Of course it is easier for some people than others. When people who look like you are constantly portrayed as backward, extreme ... it might seem like a challenge and a daily struggle to push back all these negative ideas that are sort of imposed on you.

Being unapologetic doesn't mean refusing to adapt, or not respecting the law, it is simple,y about not having to feel bad about the way you want to live.
It is about not having to apologise about the space you are taking and about refusing to be invisible.

As much as this concept has been kind of monopolised by "self-care" gurus, for me it really is about survival. I don't know if you can relate, but to me it feels like the only way I can continue to exist (through myself, but also through my child and inshallah my grandchildren ...) is about embracing who I am, what makes me unique, know and say loud and proud what I like and dislike and what I stand for.
